Kaikoura holds a very interesting record. According to the DIA it has had the largest decline in the number of pokies in any district in New Zealand (since records began in 2005).

Machine numbers have dropped by 37 machines (from 55 to 18 machines) or 67%.

The current policy for pokies in the Kaikoura District is administered by the Hurunui District Council. Its Class 4 Policy does not include a sinking lid. As one of the 30 districts without a sinking lid policy, the number of pokie machines can potentially increase. In fact, Hurunui had 11 more machines at the end of 2021 than a year before.

On average around $6,300.00 is spent on pokie machines in the district every day.

We produce factsheets about Class 4 pokies (pokies in pubs, clubs and TABs) in every Territorial Local Authority around Aotearoa which you can download from our website here.
